culprits:

1) trunk gasket
2) tail light gasket
3) spare wheel recess (small holes to outside world)

according to your post, the rear of the carpet is fine, so i would rule out #2. my best suggestion is to check #3 for any signs of holes, and patch. if #3 is ok, then try #1. good luck....
