You raise a good question. The current prototype has the rear facing detector horn covered by leather, the front horn is open (soon to be covered by the original V1 plastic. If the rear facing one is fitted with the plastic then the performance would be exactly the same as a virgin V1 (though slightly less stealthy). I don't know how much detection performance would be given up by covering both horns with leather. I'll ask Mr. Valentine if he has an opinion on the subject. My drive home from Jon's place was about 2 hours of freeway. FWIW, during this test drive home, rear detection seemed to work just fine even obscured with leather.
One aspect of performance is that a radar detector -detector might be able to detect this unit more than a virgin V1 since the V1 housing has been removed and it now leaks more RF energy. Might be a concern where detectors are illegal. I'll ask Mike V. about this also.
